Telect’s nrgSMART™ power distribution with individual circuit metering to revolutionize how communication networks view energy
LIBERTY LAKE, Wash., USA -- Telect® today announced a major advancement to its global leadership in DC power distribution and energy management. Telect’s breakthrough in single circuit DC power metering and control technology will provide network wide visibility of power usage of individual circuits, assets and equipment.
The breakthrough is leveraged off the success of Telect’s first generation nrgSMART power and enclosure systems which were introduced in 2009. In addition to addressing enclosure systems, the second generation nrgSMART includes Battery Distribution Fuse Bays (BDFB), High Current Distribution Panels, and Low Current GMT Panels. The second generation technology expands visibility into power performance across the network into shelters, switching centers and central offices. The new technology is especially suited for managing the complexities of alternative energy sources, advanced batteries technologies, LTE overlays, and colocation applications.
“For the first time, many different individual network assets can be monitored for power, temperature and status while utilizing industry standard DC distribution practices. Individual circuit monitoring opens the door to new ways to view communication and utility networks,” says Paul Knight, vice president of product development.
At the heart of the second generation nrgSMART technology are patent-pending circuit monitoring modules. The field replaceable sensor modules do not create heat or impact system reliability. Utilizing standard breakers and fuses, the modules are essentially invisible to system installers and field technicians within existing distribution form factors. A single cable provides plug-and-play communication from device to device back to a single IP based site controller, eliminating the need to create local IP networks or manage large amounts of cabling. Existing “form C” contacts are maintained to seamlessly integrate standard alarms into existing network operation systems. But when connected to Telect’s enterprise software, the nrgSMART products are the first solutions in the market capable of directly correlating individual circuit power use and network/vendor part numbers—allowing new ways to look at energy.
Telect President and CEO, Wayne Williams, says, “Simply monitoring and collecting data is not enough. In order to make a tangible impact to the cost of operations or to realize alternative energy payback goals, data must be turned into action. Telect’s nrgSMART software will empower people to make decisions to reduce costs and operate more efficiently.”

Monitoring
Utilizing standard DC distribution practices, nrgSMART enables secure and isolated monitoring capability across the network. The patent pending circuit monitoring modules are incorporated into Battery Distribution Fuse Bays (BDFB), High Current Distribution Panels, and Low Current GMT Panels provide a scalable solution for new building projects as well as expansion of existing DC distributions.

Coordination
The nrgSmart technology is especially suited for managing the complexities of alternative energy sources. Based on your individual needs, several options for site coordination are available.
- The 1RU controller provides monitoring and coordination and acts as a gateway to the nrgSMART server
- The 1RU PDU provides remote switching and metering of loads and equipment
- The Battery Manager coordinates between charging and discharging of various battery chemistries
- The Source Manager dynamically coordinates the power sourcing of solar, wind, fuel cells, generators and charging of batteries to optimize their individual power contribution.
